"Virgin River at Sunset" | Zion National Park
With our spring trip nearing its end, we made our way from Capitol Reef down to one of Utah's most popular parks, Zion National Park. The photograph above, was taken at sunset from the bridge over the Virgin River. It's such a popular sunset spot for photographers that tripod spots are marked off across the bridge. It's hard to resist joining the fray there (at least once) as the sun begins to set, it's such a lovely spot, and I enjoyed the opportunity to talk with another photographer working on a documentary film about the park while we shot.
"Zion Canyon from Lava Point" | Zion National Park
I spent another evening enjoying a quiet sunset at much more remote Lava Point. We had the place to ourselves as the campground there was still closed with snow this early in the spring.
"The Patriarchs and The Big Dipper" | Zion National Park
The moon was nearly full during our time at Zion, so I wasn't able to do much star photography while we were there, but the moon makes a wonderfully soft light source that I used to illuminate the Three Patriarchs on this particular night and was able to position myself so that the Big Dipper would be nestled in beside them.
"The Narrows II" | Zion National Park
The Narrows is one of Zion's "must do" hikes. The Virgin River makes its way through the narrow canyon walls and the river itself is the hiking "trail". In the spring the water is quite cold, and running hard, but the beauty of the canyon makes it well worth the effort.
With our time at Zion at an end, that was a wrap on the spring trip. From Page, Arizona and Vermillion Cliffs to Escalante, Bryce, Capitol Reef and finally Zion, our journey through canyon country was at an end.
