Hiking in Heaven | Banff National Park

Emerald Lake. Yoho National Park. British Columbia, Canada. Boom Lake | Banff National Park, Alberta Canada

After that first beautiful sunset at the Vermilion Lakes welcomed us to Banff, we were off and running to pack in as many miles on the trails as we could. With beautiful destinations like Boom Lake, how can you go wrong?

Our trip to Banff fell during a particularly rainy July (I think I heard some murmurings about record rainfall) but it rarely slowed us down.

An afternoon hiking at Sunshine Meadows is not to be missed.  We hopped the shuttle bus up to the alpine air of the meadow and enjoyed a quiet afternoon with the lakes, wildflowers and stunning views to be found along the trails. The image above shows Rock Isle, Larynx and Grizzly Lakes from Mount Standish as well as an approaching rain storm in the distance.

The Two Jack Lake area is beautiful but busy.  Get out at sunrise to enjoy the morning calm.

Lake Agnes |  Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

So many trails take off from the popular Lake Lousie area. It's easy to link a few together to make your own loop. We spent a great day hiking to Lake Agnes and the Beehives, a classic Banff hike.

Peyto Lake. Banff National Park. Alberta, Canada. Peyto Lake |  Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

We loved every minute of our time driving along the Icefields Parkway which stretches between Banff and Jasper.  It offers such stunning scenery around every bend as well as a wonderful variety of hikes. Peyto Lake is definitely not to be missed. Its unbelievable turquoise color comes from the glacial rock flour that flows into the lake.

Next up...an unforgettable morning at Moraine Lake.
