Milky Way Over Mount Rainier | Mount Rainier National Park | Washington
Our time at Mount Rainier was proving to be TOO sunny and clear. An unusual problem in rainy Washington. The warm and sunny weather was great for hitting the hiking trail, but the clear, cloudless skies were not ideal for landscape photography. Fortunately, those same clear skies ARE ideal for night sky photography. So I set out alone one moonless night and waited. And waited. And waited.
The Milky Way rose this fine night around 11:00 pm, but was not aligned with the mountain in the way I envisioned this image. So I waited. It was a beautiful wait. I enjoyed the calm quiet of the night and a spectacular meteor shower. Around 2:30 am, the Milky Way was aligned directly over the mountain, giving the appearance of erupting from the volcano itself. I made the shot, packed up my gear and headed back to the tent for a quick couple of hours of sleep before the sun rose.
Up next, we head north to Mt. Baker...
