"Standing Guard" | Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon is well known for its dark night skies and so my plans for photographing Bryce definitely included some night sky photography. Specifically, I was hoping to capture the Milky Way arching over the canyon. Small amounts of sunlight start to lighten the night sky about an hour and a half before dawn and during our time there the moon was up a good portion of the night, so I had a very limited window of time to work in true darkness. To maximize my time, I spent some time the day before scoping out a location or two I thought would work well in the night, adding those locations to my GPS so I could find them again in the dark.
Hiking down into the canyon in the darkness was a memorable experience. I think it was the pure silence I enjoyed the most.

I had to work quickly, to beat the light, experimenting with a few different compositions and exposure techniques and also making plans for my next night out. Once daylight began to lessen the impact of the stars, I hiked quickly up to the rim of the canyon to get ready for the sunrise.
